Overcoming Dental Anxiety

Almost everyone has some type of fear or anxiety when it comes to visiting the dentist. Columbia University ran a study and found that 9-15% of Americans avoid dental care due to anxiety. That’s 30-40 million people without dental care! Whether they are afraid of the tools, the sounds, the smells, the invasiveness, or the cost, people dread going to the dentist. To rid some of your anxiety and make your visit a little more relaxing, talk to your dentist and follow these tips.

  • Visit the office and talk to the staff before your first appointment – Make time to meet with the dentist before your appointment to ask questions and let them know of your fears. Dentist’s are happy to go slow with new, nervous patients.
  • Your dentist can explain the entire procedure to you beforehand – They can walk you through the procedure step-by-step and explain anything that you may have questions about.
  • Build a trusting relationship with your dentist – Find a dentist who makes you feel comfortable and at ease during your appointments. You can establish a signal with your dentist to “stop” the procedure, which puts you in control and alerts the dentist if you need a break during the appointment.

At Paradise Dental Associates, we are committed to eliminating fear and making your visit a comfortable one. We have incorporated some amazing practices into our everyday care.
