Have you been told you need a root canal? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Millions of teeth are treated each year with endodontic treatments and root canals. Root Canal treatment is necessary when the pulp or the nerve of a tooth becomes inflamed or infected. This can be caused from repeated dental procedures on the same tooth, a chip or crack in the tooth, a deep cavity, deep decay or injury to the tooth. Infected pulp tissue can cause pain to the mouth or lead to an abscess, which is a collection of pus that has built up within the gum tissue.
What Happens During A Root Canal Procedure?
Most of the time, root canals are very simple procedures with little to no discomfort and are completed in a single visit. During a root canal treatment, our endodontist, Dr. Pastan, removes the diseased pulp. The pulp chamber and root canals of the tooth are then cleaned and sealed. If the infected pulp is not completely removed, it can result in pain, swelling and infection.
