What Are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are most commonly used for filling gaps in teeth and to restore your smile if you
have broken or damaged teeth. Crowns can also help the mouth perform it’s duties more – like
biting and chewing. Because oral health is linked to your overall health, a crown can also have
positive health impacts on the whole body.
A crown is a cover or cap that a dentist can place on your tooth or a crown can also be placed
over an implant. Crowns both can improve how a tooth looks and restore function, also it can
help with the alignment of the jaw and surrounding teeth. Unlike dentures, crowns can’t be taken
out, they act as your teeth would.
Crown procedure
A crown procedure starts with your dentist inspecting the tooth and it’s health to ensure that it
can support a crown. Your dentist will then prepare the tooth to get a crown. Sometimes this
means filing down the tooth/surrounding teeth. Once the tooth is ready, your dentist will make
an impression of the tooth. Using our cerec machine, you can get a crown in the same day
instead of getting a temporary crown, using impressions, and then you having to go back to the
dentist. Your crown will be made and generated in one appointment to save you time and the
added stress on the healthy part of your tooth. It’s almost like having a private dental lab right in
our office.
Your dentist will then put your crown on your tooth and make any adjustments to the crown to
make sure that it looks and fits like your original teeth would. Your crown will have the same
function, look, and feel like your teeth.
How to care for your crowns?
Just like your teeth, a crown needs to be cared for. A crown is also susceptible to gum disease
or tooth decay. You will need to brush and floss your teeth as well as you can also use a
mouthwash.
