Salem Ma Gum Disease Treatment scaling and root planing

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing help us clear bacteria and plaque from your teeth and minimize the possibility that they’ll return. During scaling we use fine instruments to eliminate bacteria and infection from between your gums and teeth. With root planing, we eradicate plaque and tartar from your tooth roots. This includes smoothing down the roots to prevent bacteria from hiding in any small crevices. Scaling and root planing will improve the health and appearance of your gums and even leave you with fresher breath!

Pocket Elimination Surgery

If your gum disease reaches an advanced stage, pocket elimination surgery—an advanced gum disease treatment—may be necessary to overcome it. During this procedure, we pull the gums back to access large, hard-to-reach periodontal pockets. We then remove tartar buildup and diseased tissue that won’t respond to treatment. In many cases, the bone will be reshaped to promote proper healing and reattachment to the gums. After the treatment area has healed, pocket sizes will be reduced helping halt the spread of gum disease.

Periodontal Maintenance

While effective, gum disease treatment only addresses your issues; the disease is incurable. Once you’ve undergone treatment, the best way to sustain healthy gums is through periodontal maintenance at our office. These appointments give us the opportunity to perform deep cleaning and, if needed, additional scaling and root planing to prevent gum disease from causing you further problems. Periodontal maintenance, when done in combination with good dental hygiene habits, can help you avoid more complications in the future.

Peri-Implantitis Treatment

Though rare, dental implant failure can happen. This is usually due to the area around the base of the dental implant becoming inflamed and infected—a condition called peri-implantitis. When this happens, you may develop deep pockets around your dental implants, causing the implants to loosen, become misaligned, and eventually fall out. Peri-implantitis treatment involves the elimination of bacteria as well as surgical removal of diseased tissues, when necessary.

Potential complications of untreated gum disease

Scientific research has shown that gum disease can also affect your systemic health, sometimes to a dangerous extent, making prevention and treatment from a periodontist especially critical. These complications are the result of gum disease-related bacteria traveling through the bloodstream to major organs such as your heart and brain. The bacteria can compromise the organs’ health and normal functioning, leading to potentially life-threatening health conditions such as:
