IS IT SAFE TO GO TO THE DENTIST WHILE PREGNANT

Dentist while pregnant? What do the professionals recommend?

Yes! In fact, it’s highly recommended to go to see your dentist while pregnant! The American Dental Association (ADA), the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the American Academy of Pediatrics all encourage women to get dental care while pregnant. A study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) concluded that it’s safe for pregnant women to undergo dental treatment, including procedures that use local anesthetics. According to the study, “[Pregnancy] is a crucial period of time in a woman’s life, and maintaining oral health is directly related to good overall health.” Many pregnant women develop “pregnancy gingivitis,” a form of gum disease which, I left untreated, can adversely affect their unborn child. Here are dental care tips for all expectant moms:

1. Visit Your Dentist

A dentist can help you in keeping your mouth and your baby healthy during pregnancy. Visiting your dentist more frequently is the best way to ensure that you are keeping good oral hygiene.

2. Maintaining Oral Hygiene

Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice daily to remove plaque. Flossing your teeth is equally important to remove food debris from the teeth. Ask your dentist for antimicrobial mouthwash to rinse your mouth. This will help you in preventing gingivitis.

3. Nutrition

Always prefer having a balanced diet and nutrition diet during pregnancy and limit the intake of unnecessary sugar intake.

4. Fluoride

According to The American Dental Association, a person above the age of 6 can use toothpaste with fluoride. Alcohol-free fluoride helps in reducing plaque in the mouth.
