My Retainers Don’t Fit Anymore- What to Do

If you have finished wearing your braces, odds are you are wearing a retainer after getting your braces removed. Retainer wear is essential post-braces in order to ensure your teeth stay aligned properly. Overtime and use, your retainer may not fit as nicely as it did when you first began wearing it. If you feel as though your retainer is not fitting properly, it could be caused by a couple of different things.

Because of how vital retainers are in aligning your teeth, retainers fitting incorrectly could cause your teeth to move around. Read further to learn more about what causes your retainer to lose shape and what you can do to reverse the damage.

Shape Distortion

Over time and with a lot of use, retainers tend to alter their shape. You may notice that it is not fitting your teeth the way it should be. Your retainer can become misshapen due to a couple of reasons.

  • Hot water: Many people rinse their retainers in water before and after use. This is okay, but when the water is too hot, it causes your retainer to become distorted.
  • Accidental damage: Because of how small retainers are, it is unfortunately easy to damage them accidentally. Whether you place something heavy on top of them, drop them and step on them, or not taking gentle care of them, your retainer could definitely end up distorted.
  • Improper retainer use: The most common cause of retainer distortion is not wearing your retainer as directed. Your orthodontist directs you to wear your retainer for a certain amount of time throughout the day in order to make sure your teeth stay aligned correctly. When you do not do so, your teeth will end up moving around, and eventually back to where they were originally with no retainer use. Because your teeth are out of place, your retainer no longer fits.

SureSmile® Aligners

If you notice that your teeth have fallen out of alignment because of your retainer, SureSmile® aligners are the perfect solution. They are often referred to as “invisible braces”. They are a series of clear, plastic aligners that are replications of your teeth. When you wear them as directed by your orthodontist, they will position your teeth to the correct alignment. SureSmile® is the perfect solution for anyone who is experiencing teeth repositioning due to retainers.
